Total Battle4.4/5

Total Battle

The strongest entry in the chronicle. Battles are fought on a hex map with terrain and unit roles that actually matter, which lifts it well above the usual send-and-wait model. City management is conventional but never gets in the way, and a free account reaches the tactical content quickly.

RAID: Shadow Legends4.2/5

RAID: Shadow Legends

A turn-based party RPG with hundreds of characters and, more importantly, real interactions between them. Building a team that covers its own weaknesses is a proper puzzle. Progress slows noticeably in the late campaign, which is the point most free players stop.

Goodgame Empire4.1/5

Goodgame Empire

Castle building in a browser, with a light touch and a clear interface. It runs on anything, loads in seconds, and the alliance war seasons give it structure. On your own it becomes repetitive within a fortnight; in an active alliance it holds up far longer.

Vikings: War of Clans4.0/5

Vikings: War of Clans

A large-scale clan game where the interesting decisions happen between people rather than inside the interface. Negotiation, timing and shared defence are the whole experience. Starting without a clan is slow going, so find one early.

Big Farm4.0/5

Big Farm

The calmest game we cover, and deliberately so. Fields, animals and a production chain that fits comfortably into two short visits a day. There is no competitive pressure at all, which is either exactly what you want or not the point of the genre for you.

Sparta: War of Empires3.9/5

Sparta: War of Empires

Classical empire building with a strong atmosphere and a genuinely good sense of place. The interface has not aged well and the middle stretch relies heavily on waiting, but alliance diplomacy is still the most engaging part of the design.
